The play was written as an allegory for McCarthyism, when the United States government persecuted people accused of being communists. It will play at the Gielgud Theatre from 7 June to 2 September 2023, with a press night on 15 June. The Crucible is a play which is a dramatized and partially fictionalized story of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during 169293.
